Journalism and Communication department is one of the newly established departments under Social Sciences and Humanities College since September 2018. It starts offering Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism and Communication for 30 students for the first time in 2018. It has also a plan to open MA degree in Journalism and Communication in regular base and extension program in BA degree in 2021. The rationale behind the opening of the department is that training media professionals has an enormous contribution to the overall effort of development in the country. As one of developing nation engaged in bringing about tangible social and economic progress, Ethiopia needs well-qualified and professional journalists, communicators and public relations officers. So the department has been launched in response to the need of well trained journalists and communicators in the country. The department is striving to achieve the goal set for it by the university and be competent among the number of departments found across the Ethiopian Universities. There are more than 20 departments of Journalism and Communication in Ethiopia today. However, many of the departments are facing huge problems in fulfilling their missions and accomplishing their goals due to the severe lack of infrastructure and training equipments. Only a few universities could achieve having their own educational studios and laboratories that enabled them to produce graduates who are competent and first choice for the potential employers. Bearing this in mind, the department is trying to fulfill the necessary educational facilities in order to produce quality graduates. Currently the department is running its program with three active senior staff: one assistant professor with PhD and two lecturers with MA in Journalism and Public Relations fields and three junior staff who are attending their second degrees in journalism and communication.
