Module Description This module encompasses two courses: Globalization, Social Movements & Civil Society, and Social Identities: Class, Ethnicity and Nationalism. The module seeks to clarify relationships between globalization and the ways that people organize for political and social change. Also, it looks at the variety of ways that global economic and political integration affects political mobilization and contention. It further deals with the idea of civil society and its impact on development and democracy. The module also explores the concept of identity, i.e., class, ethnicity and nationalism and the dynamics of identity construction and reconstruction along those lines. It employs various sociological theories and methods to analyze and understand the formation deconstruction and resurgence of social identities. It attempts to situate the literature and discourse about identities in today’s era of globalization.
